Solid Waste
Programs
The solid waste programs include a variety of solid waste issues
regulated by the Ohio Environmental Protections Agency to enforce state
laws. The Environmental Health Division assists by inspecting and
reporting to the OEPA.
Solid
Waste
Landfills
Solid Waste landfills are regulated
by the Ohio Environmental
Protection Agency (OEPA). The Environmental Health Division assists the
OEPA by inspecting solid waste landfills to insure compliance with Ohio
Administrative Code Solid & Infectious Waste Regulations.There are no active solid waste landfills or transfer facilities in Geauga County. The department does annual inspections to monitor one closed facility in the county. Compost Sites
Compost sites are
regulated by the Ohio Environmental
Protection
Agency (OEPA), but are
inspected by the department to insure compliance with
Ohio
Administrative Code Solid & Infectious Waste Regulations. There
are no class I or II compost sites in Geauga County. There
are nearly thirty Class III and Class IV compost sites in Geauga
County,
most of these are related to farming, landscaping, tree removal and
golf courses.
Solid Waste
Haulers
The Environmental Health Division annually licenses
and inspects solid waste haulers that operate in Geauga County. The
inspection includes checking for liquid leaks, functioning safety
features, hydraulic leaks, functioning lights, proper signage, the
condition of tires, provisioned first aid kits and charged fire
extinguishers.
Scrap Tire
Generators & Haulers
The Environmental Health Division inspects scrap
tire generators in Geauga County. The inspection includes looks at the
storage of tires for potential fire hazards, the quantity of tires
stored, and, if they are stored uncovered, to insure pesticides are
used to prevent insect breeding grounds. For accountability
purposes the department also checks hauling records of scrap tires to
insure they are performed by state registered haulers. The majority of
scrap tire generators in Geauga County are tire dealers and auto
service centers.
